Assistantships Available

UF Campus Scene, Entrance

As part of our continued growth and expansion, the University of Florida’s Medical Physics Graduate Program (a concentration under Medical Sciences in the College of Medicine) is currently recruiting MS and PhD students for Fall 2024 admission. Five incoming students will be funded as graduate assistants – three in Diagnostic Medical Physics by the Department of Radiology; two in Image-Guided Surgery by the Department of Neurosurgery. Preference will be given to PhD applicants who hold an MS degree from a CAMPEP-accredited program, but MS applicants are also encouraged to apply.

Our established application deadlines will be extended and applications now will be accepted until March 31, 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. To apply, visit the Admissions page on our website. The expressed intent of the applicant should be included in the statement of purpose and must clearly identify which track is being pursued (Diagnostic vs Image-Guided Surgery), to which the applicant will be committed for the duration of their time in the program, if accepted/funded. Applicants are reminded to ensure their applications are complete (application; statement of purpose; curriculum vitae/resume; GRE scores; unofficial transcripts; three letters of recommendation). **Applicants who have already applied do not have to re-apply. Instead, they should email an updated statement of purpose (as outlined above) to the Graduate Coordinator.**

Diagnostic GAs (Department of Radiology) are expected to assist with regulatory compliance testing of all radiological equipment (x-ray, fluoroscopy, CT, and MRI); participate in quality control measures and safety projects; and collaborate on clinical research projects.

Image-Guided Surgery GAs (Department of Neurosurgery) are responsible for ensuring image contrast and spatial quality prior to the initiation of image guidance cases; positioning of applicable equipment/instruments (conebeam CT system) in the operating room; downloading and co-registering all required images prior to the start of a case; assisting surgeons in operating equipment during procedures; and assisting in obtaining/transferring images to image guidance platform. This may include assisting in establishing a target and trajectory, registration of the patient to the guidance system, registration of instruments prior and during a procedure, and backup of information at the close of the case. Participation in the operation of robotic surgical systems and assisting during intra-MR procedures, as well as assisting during the construction and application of cranioplasty, is also required. Note that the hours of work vary and heavily depend upon the surgical schedule. It is anticipated that after training, and a certification procedure, the primary hours will be to cover cases at the end of the day and cases added on during the weekends. This position will also assist during the 8AM to 5PM workday to assist in coverage.

Each assistantship will encompasses a .5FTE 12-month appointment, which is expected to be continued for three (3) academic years, and comes with an annual stipend of $35,500.00, as well as a full tuition waiver.

We look forward to receiving and reviewing all applications.
