Keaton decided to pursue a career in medical physics after participating in research as an undergraduate involving the detection of residual electric fields induced by high energy photon irradiation. He has been very interested in both physics and medicine since he was young, and feels that medical physics is an ideal combination of his passions.
Keaton’s education thus far has provided him with clinical experience in radiation therapy. He is interested in performing research in the areas of proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, machine learning, and image guidance for radiation therapy treatments.
Keaton’s current research (under Dr Perry Johnson) focuses on dosimetric comparisons between proton therapy and traditional x-ray therapy for lymphoma patients. He is utilizing the latest techniques in photon-based external beam therapy, such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and comparing planning outcomes against pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy. Various models will be used to compare dose to target volumes, as well as dose to healthy tissue and nearby organs at risk.
In his free time, Keaton enjoys training Brazilian jiu jitsu, co-hosting his podcast with his brother-in-law, and spending time with family.
